Honey-Do-List

We don't need to tell anybody what a challenge it is to do anything on our "honey-do-list" in Southern Alberta, especially this year.  Between battling the wind, the debris it brings with it and asking for the perfect weather, the difficulties are numerous.  We can at least help you with some tips on wood and how to prepare for the coating.

There are many things to keep in mind when you think of wood.  Wood is a sponge, therefore it will absorb all the elements.  Moisture, heat and even air will begin rotting the wood.  Understanding these characteristics is key to the contruction of your project.

When you are in the contruction stage, here are some tips that will ensure that your coating will not fail:

*spacing boards a pencil width apart for proper air flow and drainage

*sawed butt ends should be 1/4 to 3/8 space apart for proper expansion and drainage

*decks should be left open underneath or enclosed with lattice.  If the deck is completely enclosed it causes a greenhouse effect

*always try to put a slight slope to your deck to ensure drainage

*the butt ends will show you the growth rings of the tree and these are crucial in how you lay your board on your deck.  Smiley face up, frown down will help you remember

*sanding all your wood is a must!  Wood will have what is called "mill glaze".  This is caused when the blades get dull and the boards are cut at a high rate of speed.  The result is the closing off of the pores of the wood, thus your stain will not penetrate

These are just a few points to follow to help ensure the product we sell you will be best for all your wood projects!
